MEET BECCA
Becca has an undeniable passion for local food systems, resilient community building, and community education. From her time as an Agriculture Teacher at LaPorte High School, to her ongoing career as a beginning farmer alongside her husband on their farm (Tuholski Produce), to her current role as the Local Food Access Coordinator with the NWI Food Council—Becca is dedicated to strengthening our food system from the ground up. In her spare time, she loves adventuring and traveling with her husband and their 18-month-old daughter, (getting back into) running, and drinking all the coffee.
HOMETOWN - I was born in Valpo but grew up in La Porte! I definitely consider La Porte my hometown, and I love the community we have here.
WORK - I am the Local Food Access Coordinator with the NWI Food Council. I get to do some amazing food access and Food Is Medicine programming across our region, through programs such as FarmHer to Mama -- a Food Is Medicine initiative -- and through my work with farmers markets in providing assistance, resources, and funding for SNAP and Double Up acceptance.
WORK & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT - My husband and I own and operate Tuholski Produce here in La Porte, where we grow diversified produce on our homestead. We recently installed a high tunnel on our farm to allow us to extend our growing season -- we're excited to be growing greens this winter!
HOBBIES - Anything outdoors! I love running, and my husband, daughter, and I can also often be found hiking our local trails or traveling across the country to our incredible national parks.
FUN FACT - I have climbed and summited Mount Hood in Oregon! I actually used to be an adventure trip leader with IU Outdoor Adventures in Bloomington, and I had the amazing opportunity to lead and facilitate adventure trips all across the country!
HYPE SONG - Most of my music is pretty laid-back and folk-y, but one that comes to mind is A Million Dreams -- it gets me inspired to think big!
WHY ARE YOU EXCITED TO SERVE ON THE COLLECTIVE EVENTS (TCE) BOARD - I love the work that TCE is doing, and I am so proud to have been part of this work from the start with SNAP and Double Up acceptance through my work at NWI Food Council! From the get-go, Farmed & Forged and its staff have been knocking it out of the park. I am so proud of Mandy and her team for all that they are building and the work they have accomplished in only two short years of running markets! I keep telling Mandy I need her to be my poster child for SNAP and Double Up markets! TCE is an incredible model for what this food access programming can accomplish in a community, and it's been so beautiful to see the impact being made. I can't wait to see what the future holds!
